The white female shook her head dismissively. Then her eyes brightened (they were falsely excited), and she jerked her head towards the tall cliffs across the valley suggestively.
| "I buried her on the shore," he whispered as Fireheart padded up and sat down beside him. "She loved the river." He raised his head to where the first stars of Silverpelt were beginning to appear. "She hunts with StarClan now," he mewed softly. "Someday I'll find her again, and we'll be together." |

Lilacbud still could not explain the cat's silence. "Dusky," she said slowly. "Do you think... she might not be able to speak? Is it possible? because if she can't, I don't know what she wants."

Sheba glanced back up at the other cat and nodded quickly.

"But you can understand me?" she asked the other cat. "Are you just having trouble speaking, or can you also not understand me?"

Sheba inwardly scoffed. Were these Clan cats really that stupid? She dipped her white head. Of course I can understand you, mouse-brain, she thought.

Duskyrose rolled her eyes at Lilacbud. "Lilac, she's probably some rogue who wants to trick us into bringing her into camp, and then kill us all. You're so naive sometimes."
Lilacbud nodded briefly at Duskyrose. She wasn't sure now. The mention of death made her stiffen, as Duskyrose knew it would.

Sheba's insides churned. Was she really that out-of-practice? Then she was angry with herself - here she was, starving, slightly lost, and acting self-effacing for these two skeptical Clan cats. Putting on her most pitiful look, she glanced 'desperately' from Duskyrose to Lilacbud; her gaze rested on Lilacbud, as she could tell Lilacbud was more soft-hearted.

"But Dusky...." "I am not sending my clan to death," replied Duskyrose calmly. "You can let her kill you, if you want. But before you die, I want to show you something that might make you change your mind about our original conversation." Duskyrose had caught Lilac then. Lilacbud looked back at the cat's pitiful gaze, then back at Duskyrose's pleading. Torn between the two cats she looked at Duskyrose again. And then Duskyrose struck. "Falconfeather was my brother." Lilacbud jumped. Nobody knew what Allanna had planned for Falconfeather's name to be unless... She was caught and she knew Duskyrose was correct. "I give in. Let's go." She took one last look back at the cat.

Sheba snarled inwardly. She must be really out of practice. Fine then, Clan cats. Her long white tail lashed and curled around her forepaws. You are asking for it. She vanished into the undergrowth, bitter with hatred.

"Does the Medicine cat thing run in our blood, you think?" asked Duskyrose, as they started back to camp. Lilacbud thought for a moment. "Perhaps it does. I heard Allanna was very fierce, though." "Maybe it was our father." "In case you forgot, our fathers are different." Duskyrose muttered something and looked around. "It's getting dark, let's pick up the pace."
